Who are the Métis?

From the Canadian Encyclopedia:

"Métis are people of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry, and one of the three recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada. The use of the term Métis is complex and contentious, and has different historical and contemporary meanings. The term is used to describe communities of mixed European and Indigenous descent across Canada, and a specific community of people — defined as the Métis Nation — which originated largely in Western Canada and emerged as a political force in the 19th century, radiating outwards from the Red River Settlement. While the Canadian government politically marginalized the Métis after 1885, they have since been recognized as an Aboriginal people with rights enshrined in the Constitution of Canada and more clearly defined in a series of Supreme Court of Canada decisions."

Taanishi, miyoonakishkatoohk(Hello, welcome)

IamMétis.org is a non-profit organization committed to profiling the Métis peoples of Canada, individual Métis people, and Métis organizations. It is run by Métis for Métis and to bring a voice and face to the Métis peoples of Canada. Our hope is to help those who are Métis to understand better who they are, what they represent, and to help them to better identify with their history and culture and language - things all lost or diminished throughout our history. We also hope to educate non-Métis to understand better who the Métis people of Canada are, to understand what it means to be Indigenous, and to understand our place within Canada.

In the coming months, we hope to provide you with resources, links, soundclips, videos, interviews, profiles, historical articles, abstracts and synopses of academic articles, book lists, Michif and Cree language resources, and more - all about and for the Métis. We are really excited to work on this project, and hope that you find it useful and meaningful.

For the contributors to this website, this is also a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about our own Métis history and culture, and to learn better what it means to be Métis and to be one of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. It is also a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community that has given us so much over the years. Thank you. Enjoy.
